Plastering the Landing Walls
I keep making my way through the landing with now plastering the rest of the walls in the landing. As in the previous batch, the tight spaces make it easy to tackle different segments because I don’t have large expanses of walls or ceilings to do in one go. But the breaks with all the doors and corners does mean I have to use a variety of trowels and plaster knives to put the plaster down.
I go back through and give the ceiling its second coat and burnish that. Also I like doing the stain on the woodwork in between the first and second coats. I’m never fully sure of the best way to plan out the order of renovations, but my rough approach is strip both the plaster and woodwork. Wash both down and then sand the woodwork. First coat of plaster, then stain, then second coat of plaster, followed by varnishing the woodwork. It mostly works out because the stain seems strong enough to protect the wood if any plaster falls on to it. I’ve noticed that if I drip plaster on to bare wood, it will blacken it and I can’t get the discoloration out.
